Mr. Lin: We have approximately 1,000 Chinese students enrolled at our university, making up about 30% of our international student population. Besides China, we also have a significant number of European and American students due to our coastal location.

Shanghai Jiangsu Net: What aspects of application materials do admissions officers focus on when reviewing applications?

Mr. Lin: For both undergraduate and graduate programs, we primarily consider average grades and the reputation of their schools.

Shanghai Jiangsu Net: Some Australian universities are now considering high school diplomas like China's gaokao as part of their admission process. Does Newcastle University recognize high school diplomas from China? If so, how much weight does it carry in the final decision-making process?

Mr. Lin: Starting this fall semester, we will introduce a program allowing direct entry into our first-year classes based on high school exam results – provided applicants meet certain score thresholds set by each department or faculty.

Shanghai Jiangsu Net: Could you highlight some unique or strong majors offered by your institution?

Mr. Lin: As an institution known for its research capabilities, Newcastle University excels in engineering-related fields such as civil engineering; medical science; business administration; nursing; environmental science & technology; information technology & computing sciences among others.

Our research output ranks seventh nationally among all Australian universities while receiving significant government funding support – ranking ninth nationwide.

The Shanghai study revealed that these highly competitive disciplines attract numerous domestic and international applicants who appreciate the practical relevance offered by these courses.
