What is the London Eye?

The London Eye, also known as the Millennium Wheel, is a giant Ferris wheel located on the South Bank of the River Thames in central London. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in England and has become an iconic symbol of modern London.

How was it constructed?

The construction of this massive structure began in March 1998 and was completed by December 2000. The project was led by architects David Marks and Julia Barfield, who were inspired by the idea of creating a giant Ferris wheel that would provide visitors with panoramic views of the city. The eye consists of 32 glass-enclosed capsules that are designed to resemble eggshells.

What can you see from here?

From its height at over 135 meters (443 feet), visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of many famous landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, St Paul's Cathedral, Big Ben (the clock tower) and Westminster Abbey. Additionally, on clear days it's possible to see for miles across Greater London.

How does it work?

Each capsule holds up to eight people and takes approximately thirty minutes to complete one full rotation around the wheel. Visitors board through a pedestrian tunnel which leads into each capsule where they can sit comfortably while taking in their surroundings or simply standing near large windows for better visibility.

Is there any special event held here?

Yes! The London Eye hosts various events throughout the year including New Year's Eve celebrations when fireworks light up both sides of river Thames providing a spectacular display alongside its own glittering lights display.
